Trout, streamers, old rods.

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Brilliant day. Testing my new rod – actually it is a 25 years old Orvis HLS 9 by 9 but never used – I had 7 trout all above 50 cm, the biggest was 68. On streamers of course! The river got slightly higher and coloured because of melting snow. Oh, I love this streamer fishing it is at least as exciting as dry fly, definitely much nicer than nymphing. And this 25 years old rod is the example of good old mastercraft.

Winter hatch

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

It got warmer and the snow starts melting slowly. The fish are very active – as you can see on the picture, they are taking dries – tiny duns flow from around 11am till 2 pm. Avoiding catching grayling we fish streamers only. All trout caught are really in a good condition, well recovered after spawning. That doesn’t surprise me seeing the amount of food they have!

Light frost

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

The cold continues, minus 22 last night made the river almost entirely frozen. Masses of ice have gathered by the lodge, where the river gets deeper and the current weaker. On the rapids above, the water flows freely, but the blocks of ice are stopped just in front of the “stairway to heaven” – the stairs that lead from our garden to the river. Oh, I can’t look at the rods catching dust….

Some snow – finally!

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

We got richer in about 15 cm of snow during last night (we had almost none). It got really cold. Down the garden of our lodge the river carries some ice, and due to it’s very low level there is quite a few ice fields by the banks. There is an ugly cold wind, which makes beeing outside a torture.

Trout fever

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Mild days make fishing interesting. I had a chance to experience the trout fury – I caught about 70 fish in 80 casts on streamers. This really seemed like fishing a stock pond! Hey! I’m not promissing such results every day!!!!

Trout opening

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Trout opening. A 71 cm trout was reported in Lesko. Weather is not nice, cloudy, rainy, temperatures around 0. few more weeks and it will start.

First fish of the year!

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

Temperature has reached 2 degrees – at least the line will not freeze! First fish of the year was a 20 cm grayling – well I thought of a better start…. I have seen one fish rising (a grayling) taking one of quite a few dries “tied” on hook 30… Not having these sizes in my box I fished weighted spiders which gave me two more grayling. The water is extremely cold you can’t stand more than an hour fishing without a space suit.

Winter on the San

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

After few very cold nights and only slightly warmer days the river carries ice. First 8-9 kilometers below the dam are flowing freely, but below this there is more ice than water on the surface. Anyway it is far from freezing so we could skate :)

Lat one this year

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Temperature falls down every hour, to achieve less than minus 20 at night. Well this year’s river report is over. We started it with some cold weather and so we end it. 2007 was a good year for us – it gave us some spectacular fishing and it made us believe we do our job well. Still we didn’t find the ultimate fly nor the ultimate method, but we will search and keep you informed thru 2008 san river reports.
Happy New Year!

Flies on the water

Friday, December 28th, 2007

Nice weather, but temperature still below zero. Fishing isn’t a pleasure. Incedible thing is, that you can see some flies on the surface during the day. Water is perfectly clear.
