Too warm

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Still working on the house so rather busy with everything but fishing. This June isn’t top fishing, unlikely last years. Temperatures riched the sky, brightness and heat have switched the fish off, no spectacular hatches took place. Water is very low, which makes things even more difficult.

Grayling season opening

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

Working at the Riverside kept me away from the river and fishing for last few weeks, so didn’t have time to complete the river reports. Generally may was not too good this year, water is increadibly cold, all the time! it is also quite high. Grayling season started, hopefully bringing some better conditions…

High, cold water (7 degrees Celcius) has been a feature of this spring, and consequent mixed fishing, sometimes very difficult with grayling particularly reluctant to rise to dry fly. Nonetheless, some good fishing has been enjoyed by most of our groups. The river has been very quiet in the main part, until the opening of the grayling season on 1st June.  It is now becoming quiet again.  Water levels have at last dropped, though the water remains cold and rising fish are sporadic.  It is bound to warm up soon (late this year) and the hatches will be overwhelming.

Cold water

Water is very cold and still high, nicely clear, but too cold for the fish to be active throughout the day.

Too deep to fish

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Incredible how different this year’s spring is from last one. River is very high, with overflows opened, cold and rainy weather was our guest for past 3 weeks. It is getting better now, hopefully in a week we will be able to fish properly. Stunning that even in this almost flooding river the fish manage to rise picking up some dries. Anyway wading now is suicide, so noone fishes.

Melting snow

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

River is still high and extremely cold – water temperature is between 3 and 4 degrees! No doubt fish are very unfriendly. Melting snow gives a funny green colour to the water, which you can see on the picture. Still at night we have minus 3 to 5 degrees… Where’s the spring??????

Would kill for spring…

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

River stays high, for over a week already, but we fish it anyway – although the results are quite poor, we had a day with about 30 fish each, unfortunatelly most of them small (25-35 cm). Once this extremly cold water gets down a bit the real fishing will restart.

Waiting for spring to come

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

After a very windy and wet weekend, the river carries some dirty and high water. This will limit the fishing to only a few places. The spring is on its way – many birds came back already, first flowers and leaves appear, well – it is just about time!

G.O.O. – good old Orvis

Friday, February 29th, 2008

The snow has entirely gone, although we still have cold nights down to minus 5. The water is surprisingly clear and low. Fish don’t want to cooperate, probably because of the water state and a constant strong wind causing pressure variations. I’ve tested another brand new, 25 years old Orvis – the 10 feet 7 weight, western series. If there is perfection in heavy wet fly/streamer rods, this is certainlt this one. Why don’t they build such rods anymore ???

Too good to be true

Monday, February 25th, 2008

First try of spring. Up to 15 degrees during the day makes you want to live.Grayling feed like crazy on dries (grayling is out of season here) so to avoid catching them we stick to streamers, which in last 3 days weren’t too effective. This is just simply not a good trout weather – too bright, water too clear. They will probably drop some water soon as the lake starts to be full from the melting snow.
